TOWSON, Md. – Susquehanna baseball players Zach Leone and John Cooley both received weekly recognition from the Landmark Conference for the week ending April 17. Leone was named the Athlete of the Week while Cooley picked up his first career Pitcher of the Week honor.
Leone started all five games this past week and hit for a .526 average. He totaled 10 hits – six for extra bases (three doubles, two home runs) – with a 1.158 slugging percentage and a .571 on base percentage. He only struck out once in 19 at-bats while scoring eight runs and driving in seven.
This season, Leone has started all 29 games in which he has played and is batting .460 with 52 hits, 32 runs scored and 39 RBI's. He has five home runs, 16 doubles and one triple. He has only struck out seven times in 113 at-bats and has 11 walks. He boasts a .752 slugging percentage and a .515 on-base percentage.
This past week, Cooley started one game and tossed one inning of relief. He pitched a complete game shutout in a 3-0 win over Catholic on Tuesday, giving up just four hits and two walks while striking out eight. He came on in relief in SU's 19-4 win at Moravian and pitched one scoreless inning while only allowing one hit and striking out one. He walked only two batters over the two games.
This season, Cooley is 3-2 in nine games (six starts). He has a 3.37 earned run average (ERA) in 34.2 innings of work. He has struck out 29 batters, second best on the team.
The Crusaders are 21-10 overall with a 14-2 mark in Landmark Conference action and return home on Wednesday, April 20 to host Albright for a 4:00 p.m. game.
