Baseball Holds Off Frostburg State for Tourney Win

AUBURN, N.Y. – The Susquehanna baseball team used an eight-run first inning to grab an 11-8 win over Frostburg State for a victory in its first game of the NCAA Regional Tournament.

With runners on second and third and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, SU closer Liam Conboy got Cody Harman to ground out to shortstop to clinch the one-run win. The victory was the Crusaders' 30th of the season, tying the 2014 squad for most wins in a single season in program history.

Dylan Jenkins one of the bigger hits of the night, a two-run homer in the top of the ninth that provided some insurance runs for Susquehanna (30-14). He finished with one hit, three RBI and two runs scored. Matt Cassinelli went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI.

Starting pitcher Nathan Madden went 3.2 innings and gave up five runs on seven hits. Reliever Cole Luzins picked up the win, his fifth of the season, with 3.2 innings of three-run ball. Conboy earned his eighth save of the spring.

The evening could not have started out much better for the Crusaders as they jumped out to an 8-0, first-inning lead. The first 12 batters reached base for Susquehanna, including three bases-loaded walks.

The Bobcats (30-13) got back two of those runs in the second inning and added another in the third to make it 9-3.

The Crusaders scored another run in the fourth when Zach Leone scored on Dylan Jenkins's double play ball.

Frostburg State then got to Madden for two runs in the fourth, prompting head coach Denny Bowers to bring in Luzins who got the final out of the inning to keep it 9-5 after four.

In the bottom of the next inning, Luzins came back out to pitch the fifth but gave up two runs on three hits and SU's lead shrank to two (9-7).

In the bottom of the eighth, Conboy – who entered the game with one out – gave up one run as the Bobcats pulled within one run of the lead. With a runner on third and two outs, Conboy got Zach Keeler to strike out swinging to keep the damage to one run (9-8) heading into the ninth inning.

Matt Cassinelli led off the top of the ninth with a triple and Jenkins followed with a two-run shot over the right field fence to give SU a three-run cushion (11-8).

Conboy worked around a leadoff double and a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth and ended the game on Harman's groundout to shortstop Tom Giamo that left two Frostburg State runners stranded.
