Freshman Anthony Dombrowski had a great day at the plate in his first career game for the Susquehanna University Baseball team but the River Hawks dropped an 8-1 decision at Christopher Newport Friday afternoon in the season opener at Captains Park in Newport News, Virginia.

Dombrowski led off the game with a single for Susquehanna (0-1) and moved to second when Josh Cimino was hit by pitch. Two batters later, Dylan Jenkins reached on a fielders' choice play and a throwing error allowed Dombrowski to score from second on the play.

Christopher Newport (5-5) answered in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run home run to take a 2-1 lead. The Captains added a single run in the second and another two-run homer in the fifth.

In the sixth inning Christopher Newport scored a pair of two-out runs to extend the lead and added an insurance run in the eighth for the final score.

Dombrowski finished 3-for-4 with three singles while Jenkins, Danny Gordon and Cole Luzins each had a hit in the game.

Cory Fallon earned the season-opening start for the River Hawks and allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts through five innings of work. James Panzarino and Brendan Damiano combined to allow three runs on three hits in the final three innings.

Susquehanna will play SUNY Cortland at 11 a.m. Saturday at Christopher Newport and finish the weekend trip to Virginia with a rematch against Christopher Newport at 1 p.m. Sunday.
