Freshman pitcher Bobby Grigas continued his impressive rookie season with a complete-game victory as he recorded what is believed to be a school-record 15 strike outs as the Susquehanna University Baseball team posted a 3-2 victory over Juniata College Friday afternoon in the first of a three-game Landmark Conference weekend series. The same two teams will complete the series with a doubleheader starting at Noon Saturday in Selinsgrove.
Grigas struck out eight of the first nine batters he faced as Susquehanna (15-12 Overall, 7-3 Landmark) and Juniata (5-23, 0-7) played to a scoreless tie over the first three innings of action.
In the fourth inning, the River Hawks pushed across a pair of runs to take the lead.
Tom Giaimo started the fourth with a single up the middle and Taylor Luckenbill followed with an infield single to put runners on first and third. Both runners advanced a base and Giaimo scored as a result of a balk called on the Juniata pitcher.
A Juniata leadoff home run in the seventh inning cut the lead in half and the Eagles tied the game in the eighth with a double, sacrifice bunt and single to start the inning.
After Grigas recorded his 15th strike out in the top of the ninth to start a 1-2-3 inning, the River Hawks went to work to score the winning run in the bottom half of the inning.
Leone doubled off the wall in deep left center field to start the inning. Jenkins was intentionally walked. With one out, Cory Fallon doubled to left centerfield to score Leone from third with the walk-off victory.
Six different players had one hit each for the River Hawks as Leone and Fallon each doubled and Fallon recorded the lone RBI for Susquehanna.
Grigas finished with a 119-pitch effort in the nine-inning complete game allowing two runs on four hits without walking a single batter and recording the record 15 strikeouts.
