Tyler Hoagland scored 22 points and Ryan Traub added 20 for the Susquehanna University Men's Basketball team as the River Hawks took an early lead and downed Goucher College 85-72 Saturday afternoon in a Landmark Conference game in the Decker SRC Center in Towson, Maryland.
Hoagland had his second career-high effort this week after pouring in 21 points against Juniata earlier in the week. The junior point guard scored 22 points including a perfect 13-for-13 from the free throw line for Susquehanna (7-13 overall, 4-6 Landmark).
Goucher (0-20, 0-10) fell behind early as the River Hawks scored the first eight points of the game and had a 15-2 lead in the early minutes of the game.
Set Callahan scored 12 of his 15 points – all coming on 3-point shots – in the first half as the River Hawks maintained the double-digit lead for a majority of the first half.
In the second half, Goucher went on an early run and trimmed the lead to five points at 43-38 but Zach Knecht hit a pair of layups to regain control for the River Hawks. The Gophers responded with five straight points to get within four points at 47-43 with 13 minutes to play.
Susquehanna took control with a 13-2 run over the next three minutes to regain the double-digit lead. The run was capped by a Hoagland layup followed by a Matt LaCorte 3-pointer with an assists from Hoagland to put the River Hawks up 61-45.
Susquehanna maintained the lead hitting 11-of-14 free throws in the closing minutes. For the game, the River Hawks shot 22-for-26 from the line while Goucher had just 11 attempts from the charity stripe for the contest.
Hoagland's career-high 22 points led the River Hawks while Traub scored 20, Callahan added 15 and Knecht added 14 points and a team-best seven rebounds. Hoagland had seven assists to bring his season total to 99. His next assists will give him at least 100 assists in each of his first three seasons for the River Hawks.
Susquehanna continues its road trip with a game at Catholic Wednesday and is also on the road at Drew next Saturday.
