Mercer Sees Winning Streak End (Barely); SU Finishes Second at Trinity Invitational
HEBRON, Conn.; BERLIN, Conn. -- The Susquehanna University men's golf team opened its 2009-10 season by finishing in a tie for second place out of seven teams at the Trinity Invitational, held at Blackledge Country Club and Shuttle Meadow Country Club from Sept. 12-13.
Susquehanna totaled a score of 605 to tie host Trinity College. Babson College won the event with a 600 score.
SU senior Mitch Mercer (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) scored a 145 total to finish second individually out of 47 players for, remarkably, his first non-first place finish in his last seven events, dating back to last season. The medalist from Nichols College shot a 143 (72-71).
Mercer fired a 74 on the first day at the par-72, 6,787-yard course at Blackledge in Hebron before scoring a 71 the next day on another par-72, 6,787-yard course at Shuttle Meadow in Berlin.
SU freshman Pat Wilson (Andover, N.J./Newton) finished with a score of 148 (71-77) to tie for sixth place.
The Crusaders' sophomore Vincent DeMaio (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) and junior Adam Puskar (Whitehall, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) both scored a 160 to tie for 25th. DeMaio shot rounds of 86 and 74, while Puskar shot 82 and 78.
Junior Ryan Redfern (Caldwell, N.J./James
Caldwell) tied for 29th with a 164 (79-85), while freshman
Larry Vecchio (Holmdel, N.J./St. John Vianney)
scored 165 (81-84) to tie for 31st.
