Men’s Lacrosse Suffers Heartbreaking Loss in Title Game

Preston Ouellette and Andrew Porzio each scored twice in the first half to help the Susquehanna University Men's Lacrosse team to a 7-2 lead over Elizabethtown College but the Blue Jays chipped away at the lead and came away with a 10-9 victory in the Landmark Conference Tournament championship game Saturday afternoon on Amos Alonzo Stagg Field in Selinsgrove.

Susquehanna (12-7) dominated the game in the first two quarters winning 12 of the 13 face-offs and held a 26-9 advantage in shots.

Jack Donnelly, Porzio, Alec Tzaneteas and Ouellette each scored early as the River Hawks jumped out to a 4-1 lead. After Elizabethtown (9-9) scored to make it 4-2, Connor Ward scored with 1:13 left in the opening period to put Susquehanna up 5-2.

Elizabethtown started to chip away at the lead at the end of the second quarter with a pair of goals in the final nine minutes of the first half to trim the lead to 7-4.

The Blue Jays continued their run in the second half with a man-up goal 50 seconds into the period and each team scored once later in the period as the River Hawks held an 8-6 lead heading into the final period.

In the fourth, Elizabethtown tied the game with the first two goals of the period and then took a 10-8 lead with two more goals in a span of 47 seconds.

Jake Smolokoff scored with just less than two minutes left to trim the lead to a goal but the Blue Jays forced a turnover with less than a minute to play and held the ball in the offensive zone for nearly the remainder of the game to seal the victory.

Six different players scored for Susquehanna with Ouellette leading the way with two goals and an assist, Donnelly added a goal and two assists while Tzaneteas scored twice and Jack Gerrity recorded a pair of assists.

Pierce Mead won 16 face-offs including 12 in the first half and led the River Hawks with 13 ground balls.
