Softball Falls to Virginia Wesleyan in NCAA Tournament Action
MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The 20th-ranked Susquehanna softball team suffered its first postseason loss as the team fell 3-0 to No. 15 Virginia Wesleyan on Friday evening in the Crusaders' second game of the NCAA Tournament.
The Crusaders will now face No. 4 seed Kean University on Saturday at 12 p.m. Kean defeated Staten Island 8-3 in Friday's first game.
Starting pitcher Ashley Cole (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) gave up three runs on five hits and did not issue a walk to the Marlins (40-6) as she suffered just her third loss of the spring.
SU (38-8) had just three hits on the evening with Anna Heggenstaller (Liverpool, Pa./Greenwood) accounting for two of the three hits.
Susquehanna left runners stranded in each of the first four innings but Cole continued to keep the Marlins off the scoreboard during that time.
However, Virginia Wesleyan was able to put together a three-run sixth inning to break the scoreless tie. The Marlins put runners on second and third with no one out to open inning and scored the game's first run on a bunt single from Kelly Keys. They scored a second run on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Lindsey Inza and Courtney Bog followed with a RBI single to shallow center to make it a 3-0 ballgame heading into the top of the seventh.
Brittany Devlin (Furlong, Pa./Central Bucks East) drew a one-out walk in the seventh but was left stranded to end the game.
