Senior Jamie Fesinstine walked the first batter of the game and then was nearly perfect for the rest of the game as the Susquehanna University Softball team swept a doubleheader from Landmark Conference foe Catholic University Sunday afternoon in the home opener for the River Hawks on Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove.
Behind Fesinstine's solid pitching, the River Hawks (12-4 Overall, 2-0 Landmark) won an 8-0 decision in five innings in the opener and posted an 8-1 win in the second game of the doubleheader.
Fesinstine retired the next 14 consecutive batters after the walk and did not surrender a hit until a two-out double in the fifth inning. The senior then struck out the next batter to end the game and complete the run-rule shutout victory. She finished with three strike outs and faced just 17 batters for the win.
Offensively, Heather Pearson was 3-for-3 with a run and two runs batted in while Leigh Ann Greenwald and Emilie Boman each had a pair of hits. Greenwald scored twice and each knocked in a run. One of Greenwald's hits was a triple to open the bottom of the first inning and Kelly Miller added a double and an RBI for the River Hawks.
In the second game, Susquehanna held a 2-1 lead early and added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings before exploding for four runs in the sixth to break the game open. The lone run of the doubleheader for Catholic (12-8, 2-2) came in the second inning.
Greenwald was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI in the second game while Boman was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs for the River Hawks.
Alexa Gonzalez tossed the complete game with four strike outs to post her seventh win of the season.
The River Hawks will play a pair of games at Messiah Wednesday and return to Landmark Conference play hosting Moravian Saturday and playing at Scranton Sunday.
