Greyhounds Deal Women League Loss

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – While the Susquehanna women’s basketball never let its game at Moravian get out of reach, the Crusaders were unable to pull off a win against the Greyhounds, falling 62-46 on Friday night.

Rookie Jonaida Williams (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Twp.) led her squad with 16 points while Shannon Grunwald (Neshanic Station, N.J./Somerville) chipped in 11 for SU (4-17, 1-9).

The Crusaders were edged in rebounds by a 55-31 margin and Moravian (13-8, 6-4) had 23 second-chance points to SU’s six. The Greyhounds also had 26 points in the pain while limiting Susquehanna to 12.

The game went back and forth in the early going with the game at one point tied at six, with four of those points coming from Korey McCaffrey (Millheim, Pa./Penns Valley Area), but Moravian put together a 7-0 run for a 13-6 score seven minutes into the action.

Less than two minutes later, Samantha Pelletier (Harwinton, Conn./Lewis S. Mills) snapped that stretch with a three-pointer to quickly make it a four-point game (13-9). It briefly remained a four-point game until a 12-2 Greyhounds run put SU in a double-digit deficit (21-10) with 8:45 to play in the half.

The Crusaders managed to make it a five-point game (23-18) after a five-point play from Williams with 5:12 on the clock, but Moravian was quickly able to regain a double-digit lead, taking a 29-18 advantage less than two minutes later.

At the two-minute mark, it was 29-20 in favor of the Greyhounds and both teams scored buckets in the final 53 seconds to make it 31-22 at halftime.

Six quick second-half points from the Greyhounds upped the lead to 15 (37-22), the largest lead of the game to that point. With 11:19 to play, a Grunwald three was able to cut Moravian’s lead back down to eight (46-38).

For more than two minutes, the score stood at 52-42 before Moravian’s Hilary Murray made a jumper with 6:33 on the clock for a 54-42 score.

For more than three minutes, Moravian held a 56-42 lead, running the clock down to 3:06. With 60 seconds remaining, it stood 60-46 and the Greyhounds’ Alyssa Hann sank two free throws at the 22-second mark to clinch the win for Moravian.

The women take on Scranton tomorrow at 2 p.m.
