WESTMINSTER, Md. – Despite scoring 36 points in the second half, the Susquehanna women's basketball team's slow start against McDaniel ultimately resulted in a 61-52 loss on Saturday afternoon in Westminster.
SU's bench scored 32 points to McDaniel's eight points off the bench, with Amarra Boone (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) leading the way for the Crusaders with 10 points. However, the Green Terror (7-3) shot better than 37 percent from three-point range and had 15 second chance points to Susquehanna's two.
The Crusaders (2-6) did hold a dominant edge in steals with 14. Freshman Jonaida Williams (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) led the team with three. SU also shot just under 82 percent from the free throw line (9-of-11) but sank only one quarter of its three point attempts.
It was a 9-0 McDaniel lead after less than five minutes of play and Susquehanna did not get on the board until a Boone free throw at the 14:45 mark.
A Gina Palazzi (Newfoundland, Pa./Wallenpaupack) layup midway through the half made it a two-point game at 11-9 and a Nora Joyce (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) layup handed her squad its first lead of the afternoon, 14-13, with 4:25 to play in the half.
Unfortunately, McDaniel responded by closing the half on an 11-2 run to go into the break leading SU 24-16.
The Green Terror went ahead by 14 points (40-26) after six minutes of second-half action. While the Crusaders managed to chip away at that lead and pull within five (57-52) in the closing minutes thanks to two Boone free throws, McDaniel went 4-of-4 at the charity stripe in the final 20 seconds to hang on for the victory.
SU returns to action on Dec. 30-31 at the Nazareth Holiday Tournament.
