DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Susquehanna University women's basketball team used a 26-10 run spanning over the second and third quarters as the River Hawks defeated Gwynedd Mercy, 58-47, Wednesday afternoon in the Land of Magic Classic at the Ocean Center.
The River Hawks (9-1) won its sixth straight as it held a 24-point fourth-quarter lead after a Nikki Komara 3-pointer early in the final quarter. Gwynedd Mercy ended the game on a 20-7 run but the double-digit lead was too insurmountable for the Griffins to overcome as Susquehanna outscored Gwynedd Mercy 35-16 in the middle quarters.
Senior Nicole Gault and junior Courtney Adams led three River Hawks in double-figures with 11 points each. Gault added seven rebounds and two assists while Adams added seven rebounds, three blocks and two steals off the bench. Senior Lexi Biggs-Garcia was the other River Hawk in double-figures with 10 points. Komara dished out five assists to go along with six points and four rebounds. Freshman Rachel Sweger had career-highs of eight points and four rebounds off a bench that produced 24 points. Sophomore Haley Lusby pitched in season-highs of six rebounds and three assists as a reserve.
The game was tied just once and Susquehanna led from start to finish as the River Hawks first double-digit lead came with 3:28 remaining in the second quarter. The River Hawks lead would only get to single-digits once more the rest of the game.
Susquehanna shot 38 percent from the field while holding Gwynedd Mercy to just 32 percent. Susquehanna forced 11 turnovers and turned those into 17 points while the River Hawks turned it over just nine times and had 15 assists.
Susquehanna stays in Daytona Beach for one more game as it takes on Ursinus on Thursday, December 29 at 5 p.m.
