McGinniss’s Goal in Waning Seconds Leads to SU Win

REDLANDS, Calif. – The 20th-ranked Susquehanna women's lacrosse team kept up its undefeated start to the season with Wednesday night's 11-10 victory at Redlands.

The Crusaders (4-0) used a 7-5 first half to hold off a now 7-2 Bulldogs team with Emma Ehler (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) accounting for five of those SU goals and Michelle McGinniss (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) nentted the game winner with 19 seconds left in the game.

Brynn Reid (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove)
and McGinniss added two goals each for Susquehanna while Emma Jones (Wolfeboro, N.H./Brewster Academy) picked up two assists. Goalie Emily Stankaitis (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) recorded 13 saves over her 60 minutes of action.

SU was actually out-shot by a slim, 34-30 margin and won only nine draw controls to Redlands' 14 but also had six fewer free position shots (11-5) than did the Bulldogs.

The game started out on a 4-0 Crusader streak with three goals from Ehler within the first 11 minutes of action. With 8:34 left to play in the half, a Lindsey Derstine (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) goal made it 6-2 but Redlands scored three of the final four goals of the half to make it just a two-goal game at halftime (7-5).

Less than four minutes into the second half, Ehler struck again to up SU's lead to 8-5 and the Crusaders still led by three, 9-6, after a Reid goal with 20:37 on the clock.

The Bulldogs then rattled off four unanswered goals to take their first lead of the night, 10-9. Fortunately Ehler and McGinniss scored the final two goals of the game with McGinniss's coming with just 19 seconds remaining to propel Susquehanna to the win.

The Crusaders have one more game remaining in their California trip which comes on March 8 with a 10:30 p.m. EST contest against Whittier.
