WHITTIER, Calif. – The Susquehanna women’s lacrosse team ended its West Coast trip on a high note by defeating Whittier 20-11 to improve to 5-0 on the season, including a 4-0 road trip this past week.
For the fourth-straight game, Emma Ehler (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) netted a game-high five goals – giving her 20 for the week – while Brynn Reid (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) added four to go along with an assist. Meredith Crane (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) recorded a hat trick and chipped in an assist for a four-point effort. In total, nine different players netted goals for the Crusaders (5-0).
As a team, SU doubled-up the Poets (1-7) in shots (38-19) with 28 during a first half in which Susquehanna scored 17 of its 20 goals. The Crusaders also connected on 8-of-11 free position shots and committed only 15 fouls to Whittier’s 37.
The teams traded goals to open the game before an unassisted Crane goal made it 4-1 SU less than 10 minutes into the game. The Poets scored the next goal of the game for a 4-2 score and with 14:18 to play, it remained a two-goal game (7-5).
From that point on, it was all SU, however. Susquehanna ended the half by scoring 10 unanswered goals from six different players. Reid accounted for the final goal of the half, a free position shot, to make it a 17-5 game at halftime.
It took SU less than four minutes into the second half to score yet again when Annie McElaney (Natick, Mass./Natick) netted her second goal of the game for an 18-5 Susquehanna lead. While Whittier ultimately out-scored the Crusaders 6-3 in the second half, 23 different players took the field for Susquehanna over the course of the game, including three different goalies.
SU finally returns home on Wednesday, March 13 to host Lebanon Valley at 4 p.m.
