Women's Basketball Routs Catholic, 74-48

SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Susquehanna University's junior guard Rachael Hughes (Gordon, Pa./North Schuylkill) notched a game-high 15 points and pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds to lead host Susquehanna past The Catholic University of America, 74-48, in a Landmark Conference women's basketball game at Orlando W. Houts Gymnasium on Jan. 29.

Hughes was 6-for-12 from the field and grabbed the first five Susquehanna rebounds of the game.

Susquehanna (10-9, 4-4 Landmark) made the first basket and jumped out to an 18-9 lead over the first 9 minutes, 3 seconds of the game. SU led by as many as 11 points with 8:10 remaining in the half, but Catholic (12-7, 4-4 Landmark) cut the lead to 21-18 with 5:25 left. The Crusaders answered with a 9-0 run and took a 32-22 advantage into halftime. Catholic only led once in the contest, 6-5.

Crusaders junior forward/center Samantha Cartwright (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) also recorded a double-double--her second straight and third in the last four games--with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Cartwright also tied a game-high with two blocked shots.

SU's junior guard Erika Barron (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua Area) dished out a game-high-tying four assists to go along with 11 points and six boards. Barron made a game-high three three-pointers (on eight attempts). Teammate and sophomore guard/forward Jessica Zigarelli (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) also handed out four assists and chipped in six points.

Senior guard Ashley Watkins (La Habra Heights, Calif./Rosary) was the fourth Crusader in double-digits with 10 points, including back-to-back three-pointers in 36 seconds during the first half.

Catholic trimmed the lead to 32-26 with 17:44 remaining in the game, but Susquehanna answered with a 15-0 run over a 5:21 span to go up, 47-26. The Cardinals could only bring the lead to within 17 points for the rest of the game, and the final tally, 74-48, proved to be the biggest deficit of the contest and the largest triumph by Susquehanna this season.

Catholic was lead by freshman guard Jill Woerner (Providence, R.I./St Mary Academy-Bayview), who notched a game-high 13 rebounds and a team-high nine points. Woerner also tied a game-high with two blocked shots. Teammate and freshman guard Jenny McGann (York, Pa./York Catholic) also had two blocks, while fellow freshman guard Kate Priftis (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) made a team-high two assists. Senior guard/forward Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) led all players with three steals.

The Landmark's leading scorer at 20.2 points per game-junior guard/forward Brianna Peterson (Garnersville, N.Y./North Rockland)-was held to just six points on 1-for-13 shooting from the field.

Susquehanna made 28 of 67 attempts (41.8 percent) from the field, while Catholic was just 16-for-66 (24.2 percent). The Crusaders also controlled the glass, pulling down 56 rebounds to Catholic's 41.
