THE STORY: The Susquehanna volleyball team defeated McDaniel College in straight sets, winning 25-18, 25-23 and 25-21.
START TO FINISH: The River Hawks opened the first set with a kill from Erin Byrne to take the lead and they never looked back.
An attack error from McDaniel gave SU its first ten-point lead (16-6) while a follow-up kill by Marykate Sherkness allowed the River Hawks the largest lead of the set at 11 points (17-6). The Green Terror went on a 5-0 run to pull within three (21-18) but it was not enough as SU scored four unanswered points to win 25-18.
SETS TWO AND THREE: The second set was not as easy as the first for the River Hawks as McDaniel took an 4-0 lead before a service error gave SU its first point of the set. From there, Susquehanna went on a 12-7 run to take a 13-11 lead. However, the score was tied four times in the remainder of the set – the last time at 22-22 – before Tara Mahoney had back-to-back kills and an attack error from the Green Terror gave SU the 25-23 win.
In the third set, Susquehanna jumped to a 3-0 lead but it did not last as McDaniel scored four unanswered points to go up 4-3. Both teams traded points – and leads – until a kill from Hannah Lyons tied the set for the last time at 22-22. Two Green Terror attacking errors followed by a Lyons kill gave SU the 25-22 win.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE: Morgan Lowe led all players with 11 kills while Byrne contributed 10 and Lyons eight. Lyons totaled only one error in 20 attempts for an impressive .350 attack percentage. Maggie O'Hearn tallied 37 assists while Caroline Beohm had 18 digs.
