QUICK HIT: The Susquehanna volleyball team won one and lost one on Friday afternoon at the Lycoming Tip-Off Classic. The River Hawks defeated Lycoming in straight sets (27-25, 25-20 and 25-15) and then dropped the next match to the University of Rochester in five (25-8, 26-24, 25-27, 14-25 and 9-15).
AGAINST LYCO: In the first set, the Warriors jumped to an early 4-0 lead before a kill from Veronica Kirchner put SU on the board. Susquehanna tied the game twice before taking their first lead (10-9) on an Erin Byrne kill. SU maintained its lead until a kill by Lycoming's Katie Hausknecht tied the game at 23. However, the River Hawks out-scored the Warriors 4-2 to take the 27-25 win.
Lycoming started the second set with an 8-2 lead but a service ace by Caroline Beohm tied the set at 11. Another Beohm service ace gave SU the 12-11 lead and the River Hawks never looked back winning 25-20.
After coming from behind, and tying the third set at four, the River Hawks took the lead on a Lycoming error. From this point, Susquehanna out-scored the Warriors 20-11 to win 25-15.
AGAINST ROCHESTER: After taking the first two sets against the Yellow Jackets, the River Hawks were not able to put the match away and dropped the last three.
A kill by Morgan Lowe gave SU at 10-point (17-7) lead in the first set and proceeded to only allow Rochester one more point in their trek to a 25-8 win. In the second set, the game was tied 10 times – the final at 24 all – until back-to-back kills from Hannah Lyons and Lowe gave SU the 26-24 win.
Set three proceeded along the same lines as set two but unfortunately for the River Hawks it ended in favor of the Yellow Jackets. An 11-1 run in set four gave Rochester a 20-10 lead and the boost needed to win 25-14.
Both teams traded points in the fifth set until the Yellow Jackets scored four unanswered points to go up 11-6. SU managed three more points – kills from Lyons, Byrne and Lowe – but Rochester won 15-9.
SU LEADERS: Lowe finished the day with a team-high 28 kills while Byrne finished with 22 and Leana Carvin totaled 15. Maggie O'Hearn tallied 77 assists while Beohm and Alyssa Chiodo finished with 27 and 25 digs, respectively.
