MADISON, N.J. — Susquehanna University’s
women’s cross country team has been chosen to finish atop the
Landmark Conference for the 2010 fall season voted, upon by the
conference’s coaches and sports information directors.
SU received 96 points and was nearly a unanimous decision as the top team in the Landmark on every ballot. Susquehanna won the Landmark in 2008 and just missed claiming back-to-back titles last year, falling seven points shy.
Last year’s champion, The University of Scranton, was
chosen to finish second with 84 points, while Juniata College
picked up 68 points to round out the top three.
The remainder of the conference was voted on in the following
order: The Catholic University of America (61 points), Moravian
College (58), Goucher College (37), Drew University (23) and the
United States Merchant Marine Academy (21).
The Crusaders return all but one competitor from last season’s runner-up performance (four of the top five), including four, top-14 finishers from last year’s championship meet. Also back is individual champion, junior Casey Hess (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area).
Hess, senior Alycia Woodruff (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East), sophomore Carol Giblin (Cazenovia, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) and senior Lauren Smith (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) all earned a spot on the All-Landmark Conference team in 2009.
Hess and Woodruff were first-team selections, while Giblin and Smith were named to the second team.
SU will begin its season at the Bucknell Open on Sept. 4 at 10:15 a.m.
