SU Takes Part in 38th-Annual Paul Short Cross Country Invitational


BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Friday saw the Susquehanna men's and women's cross country teams compete in the annual day-long Paul Short Invitational, hosted by Lehigh University. The teams split up to run in a combined four races with several notable performances at an event that featured runners from Division I, II and III.

Runners from the women's team ran in the Open 6k and the College White 6k Race, while the men saw runners compete in the Open 8k and the Men's College Brown 8k Race.

In the men's open 8k, the top two runners for SU finished within 45 seconds of each other as Colby Brindle (State College, Pa./State College Area) came in at 30:05, less than six seconds off his PR. Next across with a time of 30:49 was Sal D'Angelo (Glenside, Pa./Springfield Township). Pat Brown (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North), a freshman competing in his first collegiate 8k, ran the course in 31:45.

The rest of the men's runners competed in the Men's Brown 8k. Highlighting the performances for the Crusaders was Ian Quinlan's (Eagle View, Pa./Methacton/Lehigh) 11th overall finish with his time of 26:01, just five seconds off his personal best time. One minute behind him was senior classmate Joe Zamadics (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) with a  time of 27:02. Justin Zarzaca (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) set a PR by 15 seconds with a time of 27:54.

As a team, the men finished 33rd out of 46 teams.

The women opened the day in the Open 6k. Freshman Megan Ashford (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) was the first Crusader across the finish line with her time of 26:42 in her first collegiate 6k race. Kim McGrath (Kendall Park, N.J./South Brunswick was next to finish with her time of 27:51 and Lauren Hendricks (Bound Brook, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) set a PR by 25 seconds after running the course in 30:13.

In the Open 6k, the women ran solidly as a group. The top four runners all finished within 43 seconds of each other, with Carly Bass (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) leading the group (25:07). Michelle Kraske (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) was next as she set a four-second PR with her time of 25:39. Shannon Galvin (Jamison, Pa./Central Bucks South) also set a personal best with a time of 25:42, eclipsing her previous mark by 50 seconds, and just eight seconds behind her was Carol Giblin (Cazenovia, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) (25:50).

The women came in17th in the 39-team field.

Next up for both squads is the De Sales Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 8.
